Garnett Hobert Blackwell, 87 of the Glenwood Park Road, Princeton died Sunday, August 11, 2013 in the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia.
Born June 26, 1926 in Pinoak he was the son of the late George Washington Blackwell and Etta Mae Cooper Blackwell. He proudly served his country with the US Navy during World War II. For more than 40 years, Mr. Blackwell worked in the coal industry, early on at the Lamar mines where he loaded coal by hand, he finished his long career at the Amonate mine with Consolidation Coal as a buggy operator and continuous mine operator. He was a proud member of the UMWA. Mr. Blackwell raised a garden until his 83 birthday; he enjoyed fishing and was devoted to his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings: Lloyd, Berman & Emilene. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bernice Darlene Boyles Blackwell, three children, Michael (Mike) Blackwell and wife Barbara of Princeton, Tammy Adkins and husband David also of Princeton and Norman Blackwell and fiancÚ Sharon Amick of Chesapeake, Virginia. Four Grandchildren, Mandy, Amy, Brooklyn and Jordan and five great grandchildren, Travis (T.J.), Tyler, Tara, Hannah and Hailey. Three sisters, Myrtle Cooper of Houston, Texas, Pearl Baldwin of Princeton and Fern Crumb of Newark, New York. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, August 15, 2013 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Tony Reed and Pastor Rob Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council. Serving as pallbearers will be Ricky Belcher, Frank Belcher, Jeff Blevins, Darrell Blackwell, Johnny Belcher and Jerry Farmer. Wayne Young and Roger Woolwine will serve as honorary pallbearers. Friends may visit with the family Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home. The Blackwell family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
