Virginia Poff Butler, 89, of the Old Springs Road, Princeton, formerly of State Street, Athens, died peacefully Friday afternoon, September 27, 2013 at her residence. Born June 6, 1924, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Poff and Mary Pearl Fletcher Poff. Virginia was educated in Mercer County and a lifelong resident. She was a faithful member of the Athens Church of Christ, where she taught Primary to the Senior Class in Sunday school. Virginia will be lovingly remembered in Athens for her work with the elderly and her beautiful geraniums that she grew every summer. She was married for 35 years to a loving husband, Fred J. Butler II of Hilltop, together they raised four children: William Poff and wife Connie of Weslaco TX, Zella Annette Barie, Pauline “Polly” Hartman and Freda Hess Butler all deceased. She was the 5th born of the sisters, all who preceded her in death: Hazel Mathena, Naomi Snyder, Annie Hubbard, Josie Hazelwood and Mae Bryant. Virginia had 12 grandchildren, 2 deceased, 5 step grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. And a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, October 1, 2013 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor C.T. Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Athens Cemetery in Athens. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from Noon until the service hour at the funeral home. Men of the church will serve as pallbearers. The Butler family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
